CARBON REDUCTION PLANNING

The road to Net Zero is long and bumpy in the contraction industry, and to get there, property developers and operators need a create a carbon reduction plan for occupiers. This typically begins with the selection of construction materials and use of energy and water recovery systems. However, the ongoing impact of furniture, fixture and equipment is becoming increasing important in planning reduction as over the lifetime of a building it can be great then the materials use to make it. (UKGBC).

Both UK and EU legislators are driving reuse and remanufacturing as a ways to reduce the carbon impact of fitouts. Organisations like BREE, WELL, FISP and SKA Rating are also now requiring evidence of reuse and reusability to with green building requirements.

REUSE

The first step in reducing carbon, which means FF&E products need to be designed to be maintained and repaired in order to extending their 1st life.

REFURBISHMENT

Gives products a 2nd life, but it is dependent on manufactures designing for reuse and offering tale back and repair schemes either directly or through service partners.

OUR DIRECTORY

dc has begun to create a free online directory of furniture, fixtures and equipment that meet these ‘circular’ design requirements.

It will allow interior designs and architects to identify and specify manufactures who’ve designing for reuse and refurbishment.

Additionally, we’ve created both a product and inter fitout reporting methodology and allows for standardised approach across all manufactures and product types. We call it ‘Carbon Efficiency’ and it allows for circular reporting.

The directory has over 500 products from dozens of global manufactures and is growing daily.

The ecolabel simplifies the results of the CPD and links to the directory and manufacturers websites.

The CPD, provides whole life carbon reporting to ISO14067 and ISO59040, for 1st life and 2nd life.

The FF&E report collates all the 1st life product carbon footprint data. It also highlights potential carbon savings from reuse.
